Sir P(elham) G(renville) Wodehouse (1881-1975), was an English novelist and one this century's greatest humorists. He wrote novels, poetry, lyrics, plays, essays and short stories. He is most famous for his country house stories with lamed-brained Bertie Wooster and his gentleman's gentleman Jeeves. Wodehouse wrote over 90 books and created over 2300 characters. Jeeves and Bertie Wooster appeared first in 1917 and appeared frequently until 1971 without aging even one year.
Wodehouse lived in France during World War II. He was interned by the Germans in Berlin and made five radio broadcasts to American from Germany. Although the broadcasts were humorous, about his life as a prisoner, the British, who were under attack at the time, were outraged and branded him a traitor. After the war, he moved to the United States.
His books are defined by gentle humor, a sophisticated talent with words, outrageous slang and highly improbable, yet complicated plots.
